A 6 Year Old Fell 5 m From a Roller Coaster While His Mom Watched in Horror

May 30, 2019, was supposed to be a normal spring break day at Lightwater Valley theme park in Yorkshire, UK. A mother and her 6 year old son boarded one of the park’s roller coaster cars, expecting a normal ride.

The passengers were secured in their seats by a safety bar. However, some people later recalled that the little boy did not appear to be properly secured behind the lap bar. At the time, the ride was still preparing to begin, and there was no indication of what was about to happen.

Then the roller coaster started moving. Just a few seconds into the ride, the 6 year old slipped out of his seat. His mother immediately began screaming for help as her son was left dangling outside the ride.

Other visitors noticed the child and realized that something was seriously wrong. They alerted the ride operator because he had not noticed the emergency himself. The operator then activated the brakes in an attempt to stop the roller coaster.

But the ride did not stop immediately. It took approximately 10 to 12 seconds for the carriage to come to a complete stop, leaving the child in a dangerous position while the ride was still moving.

The situation became even more frightening when the child let go. He fell approximately 5 m, or 15 ft, to the ground below.

The child was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Despite falling from the roller coaster, he was fortunate to have suffered only non life threatening injuries.

Investigators later examined what had happened and discovered that the park operators had breached safety regulations. The problem involved the way the child was secured for the ride.

The safety bar alone was not enough to keep the child safe, and investigators found that the park operators had failed to inform the child and his mother that he should also have been wearing a seatbelt.

The incident raised serious concerns about how the ride had been operated and how the young passenger had been secured before the roller coaster began. What appeared to be a normal day at the theme park had suddenly turned into a terrifying emergency.

Fortunately, the child survived the fall and was able to receive treatment for his injuries. The consequences for the theme park were also significant.

Lightwater Valley was eventually fined more than $480,000 after the investigation found that safety regulations had been breached. The incident showed how quickly a normal roller coaster ride can become dangerous when required safety measures are not followed.

For the mother, what began as a spring break ride with her 6 year old son became a terrifying moment as she watched him slip from his seat, dangle outside the moving roller coaster, and eventually fall 5 m to the ground.
