But what would actually happen if you stopped washing your hair forever?

At the beginning: days without washing

In the first few days, not washing your hair is usually not a problem for most people. In fact, for some hair types, skipping shampoo can help preserve natural oils that keep the scalp moisturized and protected.

If you do not sweat heavily and your scalp is not very oily, your hair might even feel healthier or look more natural during this stage.

Some people prefer going a few days without washing simply because it saves time and avoids drying out the scalp.

After a few weeks: oil starts building up

Once you reach a couple of weeks without washing, things begin to change.

Your scalp produces a natural oil called sebum. This oil is actually important because it helps protect and moisturize your hair. But when it is not washed away, it starts to build up.


At this stage, your hair may begin to look greasy and feel heavier. Dirt and sweat can also start mixing with the oil, creating an unpleasant smell.

If you kept going for many months or even close to a year, the buildup on your scalp would become extreme.


Hair follicles can become clogged with oil, dead skin, dirt, and bacteria. This can lead to persistent irritation and possible infections.

Your hair may become tangled and matted, forming dense clumps that are difficult to manage. The smell would also become very strong due to long term bacterial growth.

In severe cases, the scalp can become painful, sensitive, and unhealthy.

Could your hair fall out?

In extreme and very poor hygiene conditions, the scalp can become damaged over time. This does not mean hair automatically falls out from simply not washing it, but unhealthy conditions can contribute to hair weakening and scalp problems.
