Florida is well known for its sunny beaches, theme parks, its nightlife, and the warm weather. Yet beneath the travel brochures lies a state in which hurricanes, dangerous wildlife, extreme heat, and odd crimes can make ordinary life seem rather unpredictable.
Florida, which has over 22 million residents and a coastline extending for hundreds of miles, is one of the most popular states in America; it also houses the Everglades, a large wetland area containing alligators, crocodiles, snakes, and a number of other species.
The number of wild alligators in the state is sufficient to cause some visitors to feel nervous. It is estimated that over 200,000 alligators live in Florida and that they can be found in the lakes, rivers and other fresh water areas all over the state.
Even though attacks are rare, alligators are capable of causing serious injuries. Each year Florida has several unprovoked attacks which require medical treatment, which is why it is important to keep away from these animals.
Sharks are also a worry. The waters of Florida harbour species such as tiger, hammerhead, sandbar and bull sharks, and the state tends to have more shark attacks than any other part of the United States.
There are also the animals who will always surprise you.
Box jellyfish are capable of giving extremely painful and possibly life-threatening stings, and Burmese pythons have turned into an invasive species in the Everglades. These huge snakes can reach a length of more than 18 feet and have in fact been recorded eating alligators.
Florida is also home to venomous snakes, such as the Eastern diamondback rattlesnake; a bite must receive immediate medical treatment and around three hundred venomous snake bites are reported in the state every year.
Even among the biggest predators in Florida people are rarely seen. The endangered Florida panther is very difficult to encounter, only a small number of individuals still living in the wild. Florida black bears are more widespread and situations can become dangerous when bears feel threatened or are drawn to food.
The smaller animals in the state can also be dangerous, since black widow spiders, fire ants, mosquitoes and other insects are capable of causing serious illness or allergic reactions; mosquitoes are especially worrying as they can spread diseases such as West Nile virus, dengue and other infections.
The dangers in Florida are not confined to animals.
The state has acquired a reputation for odd crimes and strange news stories as a result of the infamous “Florida Man” meme, with headlines about alligators, unorthodox arrests, and odd behaviour having turned this fictional figure into an unofficial symbol of the state.
Then comes the weather.
The hurricane season in Florida extends from June to November and includes the risk of severe winds, flooding and a storm surge. The hurricane Ian, which hit the state in 2022, resulted in catastrophic damage and led to 149 deaths, the damages being estimated at about $113 billion.
Dangerous weather can still occur in Florida even if there is no hurricane, for extreme heat and humidity can cause heat exhaustion and heat stroke, and strong rip currents can drag swimmers away from the shore.
Should you find yourself in a rip current, it is quick to use up your energy if you swim straight towards the beach. Rather than this, you should swim parallel to the shore until you are free of the current and then swim back to land.
It is particularly important to get ready during the hurricane season, and both residents and tourists should take note of any official warnings, leave the area if told to do so, and make sure that they have their necessary supplies, food and medicine available in case the power or water services are interrupted.
Yet despite all the dangers, millions of people are happy to make Florida their home. The state has beautiful beaches, amazing wildlife, a variety of communities, world-famous attractions and a lot of sunshine.
Even though Florida has more than its fair share of things that could harm you, knowing what to look out for can make the Sunshine State a lot less scary. It’s true that the most dangerous thing about Florida is sometimes just failing to remember that paradise comes with a few surprises.
