On March 25, 2017, 25 year old farmer Akbar Salubiro headed out to harvest crops in Indonesia. It was an ordinary day of work, and there was nothing to suggest that he would not make it home that evening.
When Salubiro failed to return, however, his family began to worry. They contacted local authorities, and the following morning, a search party was organized to look for him.
The search quickly uncovered signs that something was seriously wrong. Near the area where Salubiro had been working, investigators discovered some of his belongings, including a harvesting tool and one of his boots.
The discovery left his family and the search team with more questions than answers. There was no sign of where Salubiro had gone, and nobody knew what could have happened to him while he was working alone.
Then the searchers noticed a large python nearby.
The snake measured approximately 23 feet (7 meters) long and looked unusually swollen. It was also struggling to move, which immediately made the search team suspicious.
Pythons are powerful constrictors that are capable of taking down surprisingly large prey. They typically ambush their victims, wrap their bodies around them, and squeeze until the prey can no longer breathe before swallowing it whole.
Although attacks on humans are extremely rare, the enormous size and condition of this particular snake raised serious concerns.
Authorities decided to investigate further. When they cut open the python, they made a horrifying discovery.
Inside the snake was the body of Akbar Salubiro.
The farmer had apparently been attacked while working and swallowed whole by the massive reptile. The discovery confirmed the family’s worst fears and turned what had begun as a search for a missing farmer into a tragic example of just how dangerous encounters with enormous snakes can be.
Pythons are among the longest snakes on Earth, and some species can grow to extraordinary lengths. Their ability to consume animals much larger than their heads comes from their flexible jaws and expandable bodies, allowing them to swallow prey whole.
For someone working alone in an area where large pythons are present, an encounter could become dangerous very quickly. The greatest danger during an attack is allowing the snake to establish a tight coil around the body.
If a large constrictor begins wrapping around you, the priority is to prevent it from completing the coil. Fighting back immediately and using anything available to create distance can be critical.
Once a powerful python has completely coiled around a person, escaping becomes considerably more difficult. The pressure can increase with every breath the victim takes, leaving less and less room to fight back.
Salubiro’s death remains a chilling reminder that even routine work in the wilderness can carry unexpected dangers. Somewhere among the crops, a massive predator was waiting, and by the time anyone realized something was wrong, the opportunity to save him had already passed.
