She Was Left for Dead by a Serial Killer, but the Sleep Talker Saved Her Life

In 1974, 18 year old Karen Sparks was a student at the University of Washington. Before the attack, she remembered seeing an older man staring at her in a laundromat. She also noticed a man looking at her from outside her window one night, but she thought nothing of it and went to bed.

A few minutes later, her life changed completely.

A man entered her room and began viciously beating her with a metal rod. The attacker was Ted Bundy, who would later become one of the most notorious serial killers in American history.

Karen was only 18 years old when she became the target of the brutal attack. Bundy severely injured her during the assault, and the violence left her fighting for her life.

The sexual abuse caused serious internal injuries, including a split bladder. Bundy also smashed her skull during the attack, leaving Karen in an extremely critical condition.

Then something unexpected happened. Karen’s roommate, Chuck, began talking very loudly in his sleep. The sound apparently caused Bundy to flee. Instead of continuing the attack, he left Karen behind and escaped from the room.

Karen was left severely injured and unconscious.

Her roommates did not discover her immediately. Several hours passed before they found her bleeding and unconscious. They called 911 immediately, giving her a chance to receive emergency medical attention.

Miraculously, Karen survived.

Her injuries, however, were devastating. The attack left her with permanent brain damage, and she also lost much of her vision and hearing.

What happened to Karen was one of the rare occasions when a victim of Ted Bundy survived an attack by the serial killer. Her survival was not the result of overpowering him or successfully fighting him off. Instead, an unexpected noise from her roommate interrupted the attack and caused Bundy to leave.

The events surrounding the attack also show how difficult it could be to recognize the danger before it was too late. Karen had already noticed an older man staring at her in a laundromat. Later, she saw someone looking at her from outside her window.

Those moments might have seemed insignificant at the time. There was no way for her to know that the person watching her would eventually become the man who attacked her.

Ted Bundy was eventually caught and sentenced to death in 1979. He claimed to have murdered between 36 and 50 women between 1974 and 1978, although some experts believed the actual number of victims could have been more than 100.

Karen Sparks was one of the people who survived him.

Her roommate’s sleep talking may have seemed completely unrelated to what was happening. But in the middle of a brutal attack, that unexpected noise changed everything.

Bundy fled, leaving Karen behind.

Her injuries would affect her for the rest of her life, but she survived an encounter that could easily have ended differently. The sound of someone talking in their sleep had accidentally interrupted one of the most terrifying moments of her life, giving her the chance to live.
