10. Helicoprion
More than 270 million years ago, the oceans were haunted by one of the strangest predators ever discovered. Helicoprion looked like a shark, but instead of normal teeth, it had a terrifying spiral shaped jaw packed with razor sharp blades. Scientists believe this “buzzsaw mouth” could slice through soft bodied prey with brutal efficiency. Growing up to 8 metres long, this ancient hunter cruised prehistoric seas long before dinosaurs even appeared, making it one of the weirdest and scariest marine creatures in Earth’s history.
9. Pterodactyl
Long before birds ruled the skies, giant flying reptiles known as pterosaurs dominated the air. Some species reached wingspans of over 11 metres, making them as wide as small airplanes. Despite the nickname “pterodactyl,” there were actually more than 130 different types of pterosaurs. Arthropleura lived over 320 million years ago and grew up to 2.5 metres in length, making it the largest land invertebrate ever discovered. Covered in armored plates and dozens of legs, this gigantic crawler moved through swampy forests when oxygen levels on Earth were much higher than today. Although scientists think it mostly ate plants, its enormous size and alien appearance would have been enough to terrify almost anything that crossed its path.
7. Mosasaurus
The mosasaurus was one of the most feared predators to ever dominate the oceans. These giant marine reptiles could grow over 15 metres long and had powerful jaws lined with sharp teeth designed for crushing prey. They hunted sharks, fish, sea birds, turtles, and even other mosasaurs. Unlike dinosaurs that roamed the land, mosasaurs were perfectly adapted for life underwater, using their strong tails to move quickly through ancient seas. If you fell into the ocean during the Late Cretaceous period, escaping one would have been nearly impossible.
6. Smilodon
Smilodon, often called the saber toothed tiger, was one of the deadliest predators of the Ice Age. Despite its nickname, it was more closely related to modern lions than tigers. Its most terrifying feature was its pair of massive canine teeth, which could grow up to 20 centimetres long. These sharp fangs were used to stab and slash large prey such as bison and giant ground sloths. Built with powerful muscles and thick limbs, smilodon was not a fast runner, but once it grabbed its victim, escape was unlikely.

Before Tyrannosaurus rex became king, Giganotosaurus ruled the prehistoric world. This massive predator lived around 98 million years ago in what is now South America and could grow longer than a school bus. Scientists believe it was faster and more agile than T. rex, with powerful jaws capable of tearing huge chunks of flesh from prey. Giganotosaurus hunted giant plant eating dinosaurs and may have even worked in groups. With few natural enemies and enormous size, it stood at the top of the food chain during its time.
4. Spinosaurus
Spinosaurus was the largest carnivorous dinosaur ever discovered, growing up to 18 metres long and weighing more than most other meat eating dinosaurs. Unlike T. rex, spinosaurus spent much of its time in rivers and swamps, hunting giant fish with its long crocodile like snout. Its huge sail shaped spine made it look even more intimidating. Scientists believe it may have been the first known swimming dinosaur, using powerful limbs and a paddle like tail to move through water. Encountering one near an ancient river would have been a nightmare.
3. Titanoboa
After the extinction of the dinosaurs, another monster rose to power. Titanoboa was the largest snake ever known, stretching up to 12 metres long and weighing more than a tonne. Living in the hot jungles of South America around 58 million years ago, this giant serpent hunted crocodile like reptiles and enormous fish. Like modern boas, it killed by wrapping its body around prey and crushing it with incredible force. Its sheer size meant a fully grown titanoboa could easily overpower almost any animal in its environment.

Hundreds of millions of years ago, giant sea scorpions lurked beneath ancient oceans and coastal waters. Known scientifically as eurypterids, some species grew over 2.5 metres long, making them among the largest arthropods ever to exist. Equipped with large claws and spiny limbs, they were skilled predators that hunted fish and smaller marine animals. Their armored bodies and alien appearance made them look like creatures from a nightmare.
