Study Shows That Owning a Dog Can Help You Live Longer

Dogs have been called humanity’s best friend for centuries, and millions of people welcome them into their homes for companionship, loyalty, and their unconditional affection. But new research suggests that having a dog may offer benefits that go beyond emotional support.

According to a large study, owning a dog could be linked to a lower risk of death and may even help improve heart health.

Researchers in Sweden analyzed previous studies examining the connection between dog ownership and mortality. The research combined data from 10 different studies involving more than 3.8 million participants.

The results showed that dog owners had a 24% lower risk of dying from any cause compared with people who did not own dogs. The benefits appeared to be even stronger among people who already had a history of heart problems.

People who owned dogs were also found to have a significantly lower risk after experiencing a heart attack. The study showed that dog owners were 65% less likely to die following a heart attack compared with those without dogs.

Scientists believe several factors could explain why dog ownership is associated with better health outcomes. One of the biggest reasons may be increased physical activity. Taking a dog for daily walks encourages owners to stay active, and even 20 to 30 minutes of walking each day can support cardiovascular health.

Dogs may also improve mental health. Previous research has shown that pets can help people manage stress, reduce feelings of loneliness, and increase social interaction. These factors are important because chronic stress, isolation, and loneliness have all been linked to a higher risk of health problems and premature death.

However, researchers warn that owning a dog is not a replacement for medical care or a healthy lifestyle. Having a pet will not automatically prevent conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or diabetes.

They also emphasize that adopting a dog is a serious responsibility. Dogs require proper nutrition, regular exercise, veterinary care, attention, and a safe environment. A pet should never be brought into a home without considering whether the owner is prepared to provide the care it needs.

While owning a dog may come with many health benefits, the relationship works both ways. A happy and healthy dog depends on a committed owner, and in return, that companionship may help people live healthier and potentially longer lives.
