A 15 Ton Whale Swallowed Him, Seconds Later He Was Being Tossed Around in Its Mouth

Swimming alongside a giant whale can feel like entering another world. The water is calm, the enormous animal moves gracefully through the ocean, and for a few seconds, you might forget that you are sharing the water with one of the most powerful creatures on Earth.

Now imagine that peaceful encounter suddenly becoming a nightmare. One moment you are watching the whale from the water, and the next, its enormous mouth closes around you. Everything becomes dark as your body is pushed and tossed around by an animal weighing roughly 15 tons.

This sounds like something from a horror movie, but Rainer Schimpf experienced a terrifying version of it in 2007 while filming marine life off the coast of South Africa. Schimpf was photographing a group of whales when one of the massive animals suddenly moved toward him and engulfed him in its mouth.

For a terrifying moment, he was trapped inside the whale’s mouth. He could feel the enormous animal moving around him as he was surrounded by darkness and water. There was little he could do except remain calm and hope the whale realized that he was not something it wanted to eat.

Fortunately, the whale quickly opened its mouth and released him. Schimpf escaped without being swallowed, turning what could have been a fatal encounter into one of the most extraordinary whale encounters ever recorded.

But what if the whale had continued moving forward? What would happen if a human actually passed beyond the mouth?

The answer depends heavily on the species. Many people assume that the blue whale, the largest animal ever known to exist, could easily swallow a human because of its enormous mouth. However, that is not actually the case. Blue whales feed using baleen plates, which filter tiny organisms from the water, and their throat is far too narrow to allow an adult human to pass through.

Sperm whales are different. They have enormous heads, powerful jaws and large teeth that can reach impressive sizes. Their anatomy makes them the whale most capable of theoretically swallowing a human, although humans are not their normal prey.

If someone were caught inside a sperm whale’s mouth, the first danger would be the powerful jaws and teeth. Sperm whales can have numerous teeth along their lower jaw, and each tooth can weigh several pounds. Being thrown around inside that mouth could cause serious injuries before the person even had a chance to escape.

The next danger would be the lack of breathable air. A person trapped underwater already has only a limited amount of time, but being surrounded by a giant animal would make the situation even more frightening. The person would have to hope the whale quickly rejected them and pushed them back into the ocean.

Actually reaching the stomach would make survival far less likely. The digestive system is not a safe place for a human, and there would be no reliable source of breathable air. Digestive fluids, physical movement and prolonged oxygen deprivation would create an extremely dangerous environment.

Fortunately, whales generally have no reason to attack humans. Even when they accidentally engulf something much larger than their usual food, they can reject it and force it back out.

That is exactly why Schimpf was so fortunate. He was not swallowed, and the whale released him before the encounter could become much worse.

So although being swallowed by a 15 ton whale sounds like an almost certain death sentence, the real lesson from this terrifying encounter is simple. The safest way to survive such an experience is to never get close enough for a whale to accidentally scoop you into its mouth in the first place.
