In the mid 1880s, a hardworking lamplighter in New York came up with an unusual solution to a problem that could have cost him his livelihood: oversleeping.
Sam Wardell’s job required him to be extremely punctual. Each evening, he would light the city’s street lamps, and at dawn, he would return to extinguish them. Missing his morning duties could have serious consequences, so Wardell devised a homemade alarm system that he believed would guarantee he woke up on time.

His invention was simple but effective. He attached an alarm clock to a shelf and placed a heavy weight on top of it. When the alarm went off, the mechanism would cause the shelf to drop, sending the heavy object crashing onto the floor.
The loud impact was impossible to ignore.
For some time, the unusual alarm worked exactly as Wardell intended. He woke up on schedule and continued arriving on time for his morning responsibilities.
Then Christmas came.
After spending the evening celebrating with guests and having a few drinks, Wardell reportedly decided to demonstrate his clever invention. He showed his visitors how the alarm worked before resetting everything for the following morning.

But there was a problem.
After putting the mechanism back together, Wardell’s measurements were slightly off. The shelf and heavy weight were no longer positioned exactly as they had been before.
The next morning, the alarm clock went off as usual. But instead of the weight crashing safely onto the floor, the heavy object fell directly onto Wardell.
The impact struck him in the head and killed him.
A device that had been designed to make sure Wardell never overslept had instead become the cause of his death.

The tragedy was particularly ironic because the invention itself had apparently worked for him many times. The danger came from a small change to a homemade mechanism after a night of celebration.
Wardell’s story is a strange example of how an invention designed to solve an everyday problem can become dangerous when its safety depends on precise positioning. What had once been a clever alarm system became a deadly trap overnight.
His determination to never be late ultimately had the opposite result. On that Christmas morning, there was no alarm he could wake up to, and the device he had trusted to get him out of bed became the last thing he ever encountered.
