For decades, space tourism has existed only in science fiction. Hotels orbiting Earth, tourists waking up to views of the planet below, and vacations beyond the atmosphere seemed like something that would not happen for generations.
But that future may arrive sooner than many people expect.
The Gateway Foundation has proposed the Von Braun Station, a space hotel designed to bring regular travelers into orbit. The project aims to create the first cruise ship style hotel in space, offering guests a chance to experience life beyond Earth.
Instead of floating inside a small spacecraft, visitors would stay in a large rotating space station designed for comfort, entertainment, and research.
The Von Braun Station would be built in low Earth orbit and consist of 24 separate modules. Each module would have a specific purpose, creating a complete hotel environment hundreds of kilometers above the planet.
Guests would have access to restaurants, bars, kitchens, private hotel rooms, luxury villas, and even a gym where they could exercise and play sports in reduced gravity.
The station would not only be a place for vacations. Some modules would also be dedicated to scientific research, astronaut training, and other space related activities.
One of the biggest challenges of living in space is the lack of gravity. The Von Braun Station plans to solve this problem through its rotating design. As the station spins, it would create artificial gravity, allowing guests to walk around more naturally instead of constantly floating.
The level of gravity would not be exactly the same as Earth’s, but it would make daily activities much easier compared to traditional space stations.
The planned hotel would be able to host around 352 guests at a time, with a maximum capacity of about 450 people. This would make it significantly larger than current space facilities, which are designed mainly for professional astronauts rather than tourists.
Sustainability would also be a major focus of the station. Because transporting supplies from Earth is extremely expensive, the hotel would need to recycle as much as possible. Water, waste, and other materials would be reused, stored, or processed to reduce the need for constant deliveries from Earth.
At first, a stay at the Von Braun Station would likely be extremely expensive and available only to wealthy travelers. However, the Gateway Foundation has suggested that prices could eventually drop, potentially becoming comparable to a luxury cruise vacation.
The idea of a space hotel still faces enormous engineering and financial challenges. Building a massive structure in orbit requires advanced technology, reliable transportation, and significant investment.
However, the concept shows how quickly space exploration is changing. What was once limited to astronauts and governments could eventually become a destination for ordinary travelers.
The first space hotel may not be a fantasy anymore. In the future, checking into a hotel could mean leaving Earth behind and waking up to a view of an entire planet outside your window.
