The Amazon rainforest is one of the largest forests on the globe and is so extensive that it is difficult to conceive of it ever vanishing. However, people are cutting down a large number of trees each year, and this is doing harm to the rainforest, if too many trees are lost then the Amazon might end up being very different from its present state.
The Amazon houses a great many animals and plants, among them are monkeys, coloured birds, snakes, frogs, insects, and a variety of other creatures. Since some animals and plants are found nowhere else in the world, they too could disappear if their habitats are lost.
Trees are also of great importance to our planet since they remove carbon dioxide from the air and store it, at the same time they give off oxygen and assist in making the air and the climate healthier.
People cut down trees for a variety of reasons. Certain land is used for farming and for areas where cows may live. Trees are felled as well for the purpose of mining, for building roads, and for other types of buildings. Fires are also able to destroy further sections of the rainforest.
One other interesting point concerning the Amazon is that certain plants may be of use in the development of new medicines. Scientists have already discovered useful compounds in plants from the rainforest. Yet there are still a great many plants which scientists have never examined.
It is possible that there is a plant somewhere in the Amazon which could be used to produce a medicine for a serious illness. However, if the plant is destroyed before it is discovered, we might never find out how useful it could have been.
The Amazon plays a role in producing rain as well, the trees release water into the air, and this water then becomes part of the clouds, which in turn can cause it to rain again in the forest and in other areas.
If too numerous trees are cut down, there could be less water entering the air. In some areas it might get hotter and drier. Once the land has become dry, fires will also be more likely to spread.
There’s another issue. Trees hold a great deal of carbon within themselves. If the trees are burned or felled, some of that carbon can then be released into the air.
At the same time, there are fewer trees remaining which can remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and this can thus make climate change worse.
It can turn into a serious problem which continues to worsen, as the climate warms the rainforest becomes drier and a drier rainforest in turn leads to more fires and the loss of even more trees.
Yet there is still a chance.
Forests will be able to regrow if humans cease destroying them and allow them sufficient time, small plants and trees can once again begin to grow and animals can gradually return to areas where the forest has recovered.
The issue is that it takes a long time for a rainforest to develop. You can’t destroy a large forest today and then expect it to be the same again the following year.
That is the reason why it is so important to protect the Amazon, it is easier to preserve a forest which already exists than it is to attempt to create a new one after it has been destroyed.
Governments may establish protected areas, farmers may use their land more carefully, and companies may find ways to reduce the amount of forest they destroy.
It is true that a single individual never being able to save all of the Amazon alone, many people working together can still make a difference.
The Amazon is more than simply a large collection of trees, it provides a home for millions of living organisms and plays an important role in Earth’s natural systems.
So long as we look after it, the rainforest can remain there for animals, plants, and people for a very long time.
